La palabra símbolo deriva del latín symbolun, la cual a su vez procede del griego, y se le utiliza para denotar la imagen, figura o divisa con que materialmente o de palabra se representa un concepto moral o intelectual por alguna semejanza o correspondencia que el entendimiento percibe entre este concepto y aquella imagen. Esta característica humana, la de crear símbolos, tuvo su origen en épocas ancestrales donde las huellas de diferentes tipo servían para indicar presencia, identidad grupal o territorialidad. Extrapolando esta idea, existe una tendencia natural de toda institución por hallar uno o más símbolos que expresen la idea de su existencia.
