Schizophrenia and pragmatic language assessment in patients attended to community mental health centers

Objective: To delimit the level of the pragmatic component of language in patients with schizophrenia attended to community mental health centers in Lima, 2023. Materials and methods: This study was non-experimental, with a quantitative approach, basic type, descriptive, prospective and cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 74 users with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. The Pragmatic Awareness Questionnaire was used for data collection. Results: A total of 82.44 % were at a regular level in terms of enunciative pragmatics; regarding textual pragmatics, 81 % were at a regular level; and regarding interactional pragmatics, 85.13 % were at a regular level. Conclusions: It is evident that, for the most part, patients with schizophrenia retain a good level of pragmatic language. This could be due to the fact that the sample was under continuous pharmacological and therapeutic treatment, so it is suggested to maintain specialized care programs in this population and, above all, to consider phonoaudiological intervention to maintain the function of language at a cognitive level.
