Abstract

Falls among adults over 65 years of age at home are one of the leading causes of hospitalization, loss of autonomy, and serious complications, especially when not detected promptly. This situation affects their quality of life and generates a significant emotional and physical burden on caregivers. Objective: To design, develop, and validate a fall detection system that generates immediate alerts and serves as a support tool in home environments. Materials and methods: A qualitative and descriptive approach was employed based on the Double Diamond model of the Design Council. The process included background analysis, patent review, benchmarking, 3D modeling, and functional validation. Additionally, semi-structured interviews and direct observation were conducted. The validation of  he developed system involved 20 participants in total: 2 older adults and 1 caregiver participated in person,  omplemented by virtual participation from 17 caregivers. Results: The CuiDarte system consists of a wearable with an accelerometer that detects falls and sends visual, auditory, and wireless alerts. It includes a multifunctional charging base with a clock, light, and sound signal that facilitates interaction and promotes user autonomy. Testing demonstrated high accuracy in detecting simulated falls and ease of use for participants. Conclusions: CuiDarte is an effective solution for improving the safety of older adults. Validation in extended home settings and integration with specialized services is recommended.
