Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence of foot arch abnormalities (flat foot and cavus foot) in children aged 5 to 12 years at an educational institution in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, during 2023. Materials and methods: The foot, as a three-dimensional structure essential for human stability and locomotion, can present variations in the foot arch that affect gait biomechanics and predispose individuals to musculoskeletal problems. The study population included 109 children, whose footprints were taken using the Hernández Corvo method, along with the collection of sex and age data for analysis. Results: A prevalence of flat foot of 12% was observed in the studied group, with 15% of cases in the left foot and 10% in the right foot. In addition, a prevalence of 35% of cavus foot was found, which is the most common abnormality among the children evaluated. Findings indicated a higher incidence of cavus foot compared to normal flat foot or normal arch in this infant population, which is consistent with previous studies in similar populations. Conclusions: The high prevalence of foot arch abnormalities suggests the need to implement early assessment and management strategies in children to reduce future orthopedic problems and improve quality of life.
